e n i n g s i n J u ly 8th Annual Awards Presentation & Fellowship Night Top Honours to Chan Chee Keong Lion Chan Chee Keong was named Lion Of The Year for 1996/97 by Immediate Past President Chey Chor Khoon at the 8th Annual Awards Presentation held on 10th July 1997 at Hotel Plaza. Citing him as "a stalwart behind almost all of our projects and activities", IPP Chey commended Lion Chan for more than fulfilling his obligations to our Club despite his many other responsibilities. Also lauded was new member Lion Steven Yeong, who was named Champion Fund Raiser for his single-handed efforts in securing 12 advertisements for the Commemorative Magazine produced for the occasion. Sharing the limelight were Teo Cheng Peow, as Project Director ("a responsible IPP"), Charles Chau ("a hardworking Secretary"), Robert Liew ("a highly efficient Treasurer"), Donald Wee ("an effective Tail Twister"). Also recognised were Tony Tan for spearheading the Used Eyeglasses programme; Tham Joi Pun for creating our Website; and Frank Goh for coordinating the advertisements for the magazine. Guests-of-Honour at the function were DG Dr Winston Koh and his wife, Molly. |

LETTER It is not often that "The Gardens Grapevine" receive letters from its readers. Heres one from the Organising Chairman of this years Lions Family & Sports Day, Dr Anthony Chung. We publish it with the hope that we will get more mail. Dear President, Your report on the Lions Family & Day was largely accurate. However, I would like to make a couple of points and comments. 1. Your report that "the beautiful trophies with long lineage went unclaimed" is ambiguous. If you mean the challenge trophies, these are perpetual trophies and as the name implies were donated by PDGs to perpetuate their names. They are not to be given away. In future, maybe we could re-allot a fixed field item to each trophy permanently. This may not be very easy as different events are picked in different years. However it is not impossible - we just have to pick the more popular ones and stick to them. We also had on that day 50-60 smaller trophies. All the trophies were given away. 2. Your comment "so what? Its only humanly natural to make money in comfort". I feel that you should not have put the emphasis on making money. Our main objective was to have Lions (enjoy) fun and fellowship. It was a great joy and pleasure for me to see all Lions and their families participating, whether selling kueh or running in the field or playing table tennis. I am sure those Lions who put up foodstalls - their intention was not to make money. In fact many many clubs forgo their 30% claims for rebate. Most could not cover their costs even with the rebate. "We Serve" Region Chairman Dr Anthony Chung GOLF ! Members interested in playing a round of social golf - keep Friday 1st August afternoon free. Contact President ("Doc")Tony Tan for details. |
