Happenings in August

YOUTH EXCHANGE

Cool night out for youngsters

It was a fairly tame affair. The visit to the Night Safari on 6th August, which was organised by our Club, did not frighten the 18 boys and girls.

Rather, they found the "safari" a bit too relaxing. The tram ride, the rain earlier in the day, and the presence of many Lion-uncles and aunties made the evening an uneventful one, notwithstanding the long "jungle-walk" they took with Lions Michael Wong and Tham Joi Pun.

Communication Problem

The 18 youth on this year’s Exchange programme were selected by their schools. 15 were Japanese, and 3 were Taiwanese. This trip, which took them through East Malaysia earlier on, was like a reward for good work done. Most of them could not speak English very well, nor did they seem to know what Lionism was all about.

First Time for Some Lions

Eight of our members assembled at Newton Hawker Centre at 5.45 p.m. that evening, and by 7p.m., the whole contingent was already at the Night Safari at Mandai. After a burger dinner, the Lions ventured into the jungle with the "cubs".

By about 10p.m. the adventurers were safely back in Newton where their sponsoring Lions came to take them home.

For some of us, it was the first time at the Night Safari, and also the first time in contact with the Lions Youth Exchange Programme. Cool.

World Lions Service Day

Do something worthwhile for our community -

clean the beach on 12th Oct

Some say it’s too much like CWO. Others ask why do it when there are people who are paid to do the job. Yet others don’t want to pick up what foreign workers leave behind after a wild Saturday night out on the beach.

But Lions are here TO SERVE our community, not just to raise funds or to help the needy. So in that spirit, the Region Chairmen and Zone Chairmen met 12th August to propose Beach Cleaning as the Project to mark this year’s World Lions Service Day. This will be put to the Club Presidents on 1st September for approval.

The plan is to clean a 6-km stretch of beach at East Coast Park from Fort Road to the Bedok Jetty. Assembling at the Park behind MacDonald’s at 8.30a.m. for the Opening Ceremony, Singapore Lions and families will be assigned short stretches of the beach. Disposable gloves and garbage bags will be provided. Wear your Lion’s vest.

Bring your own food, drinks and swim-wear for fellowship after the event.

Tee-off at 1.00p.m. at Sembawang Country Club.
