MOTOR INSURANCE
Are you obligated to insure?
Under the Motor Vehicles (Third Party Risks and Compensation) Act CHAPTER 88, it is an offence to use a motor vehicle on a public road without a valid policy of insurance providing at least "Act" only cover. It is also a statutory requirement that the driver must produce a valid certificate of insurance at a time whilst the vehicle is being used.
Types of Policy
Third Party Only
This is the minimum coverage required by the Law. It covers the insured and the authorised driver against third party property damage and third party bodily injury/death.
Third Party Fire and Theft
This offers the above third party coverage as well as damages to the insured's vehicles caused by fire or theft. It does not cover any other accidental damage.
Comprehensive Cover
This is the widest cover offered. It covers the insured and the authorised driver against third party property damage, third party bodily injury/death as well as damages to the insured's vehicle caused by accident, fire or theft.
Insured Value
This is only applicable to Comprehensive and Third Party, Fire and Theft policies where the value to be insured is generally defined as the current, free market value. The fixing of the value insured is the responsibility of the Insured.
Geographical Limits of Cover
The Republic of Singapore, West Malaysia and the southern part of Thailand within 50 miles of the border between Thailand and West Malaysia.
